Honouring the Cycles Within: Choosing the Right Bodywork for Where You’re At

Lately, I’ve been paying closer attention to something I used to push past… my own cycle.

As a bodyworker, it’s easy to focus entirely on the people on the table — showing up, holding space, giving what’s needed.

But as I deepen into this work, I’m realising something important:

I can’t support others to truly listen to their bodies if I’m not doing the same for my own.

There are times in my cycle where I feel energised, grounded, and fully resourced — able to hold strong, deep, transformative sessions. And then there are times (like recently), where my hormones are heightened, my energy dips, my body feels more sensitive, and I can feel a deep pull inward. In those moments, pushing through a full client load doesn’t feel aligned — it feels depleting.

So I’ve started honouring that.

Blocking space. Softening my output. Listening.

And that shift has started to ripple into how I support my clients too.

Meeting the Body Where It Is — Not Where We Think It Should Be

A client came in the other day booked for a deep tissue massage.

But when she arrived, she shared she had just started her period. She felt flat, heavy, a bit “blah”… and unsure if deep tissue was actually what her body needed.

We paused.

We listened.

And together, we chose something different.

Instead of working against her system, we worked with it — using gentle bodywork, including fascial unwinding, allowing her body to lead the session.

Her system softened. Her body unwound in the places that needed it most. We finished with relaxation massage to give her that sense of being held and nurtured.

At the end, she said:“That was exactly what I needed today.”

Not because we followed the plan — but because we followed her body.

Your Cycle Matters More Than You Think

Your body isn’t the same every day — and your cycle plays a huge role in how you experience touch, pressure, and release. When you begin to align your bodywork with your cycle, sessions often feel more effective, more supportive, and more deeply received.

Here’s a gentle guide to what that can look like:

🌑 Menstrual Phase (Your Bleed)

Energy: LowBody: Sensitive, inward, releasing

This is a time for rest, nourishment, and gentleness.

Deep tissue or intense work can sometimes feel overwhelming or too much for the system here — especially if your body is already processing a lot.

Supportive options:

  • Gentle relaxation massage

  • Holistic pulsing

  • Fascial unwinding

  • Stillness, holding, nurturing touch

Think: softening, allowing, being held

🌱 Follicular Phase (After Your Period)

Energy: RisingBody: More open, receptive

Your system is starting to come back online. There’s often more capacity here — both physically and mentally.

Supportive options:

  • Myofascial release

  • Moderate pressure massage

  • Fascial work

  • Exploratory sessions

Think: building, opening, re-engaging.

☀️ Ovulatory Phase (Mid-Cycle)

Energy: PeakBody: Strong, resilient, outward

This is often when your body feels most capable of deeper, more targeted work.

Supportive options:

  • Deep tissue massage

  • Focused therapeutic work

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Structural work

Think: release, action, transformation.

🌙 Luteal Phase (Pre-Menstrual)

Energy: Fluctuating → DecliningBody: Can feel heavier, more sensitive, inward-focused

This phase can vary — some days you may feel okay for deeper work, others not at all.

It’s a time to start slowing down and tuning in more closely.

Supportive options:

  • Gentle to moderate pressure

  • Myofascial release

  • Fascial unwinding

  • Calming, regulating sessions

Think: grounding, balancing, softening.

It’s Not About Rules — It’s About Awareness

This isn’t about getting it “right” or following strict guidelines.

It’s about learning to pause and ask:

“What does my body actually need today?”

Because sometimes what we think we need — like deep pressure or “fixing” tightness — isn’t what the body is asking for at all.

And when we listen…the body often responds in a much deeper, more lasting way.

A Gentle Invitation

Next time you book a session, take a moment to check in with where you’re at in your cycle.

Notice your energy. Your sensitivity. Your capacity.

And know that when you come in, we can always adjust.

You don’t have to arrive with the “right” booking — we can meet you where you are, and choose what will truly support your body on the day.

Because the most powerful sessions don’t come from pushing…

They come from listening.
